Dog Show
This is an entire program in itself. There is a handbook just for the dog show. You can enter showmanship, obedience, agility, and/or rally.
You will progress through the dog program as your dog masters different skills. It is required that you receive a purple ribbon (it says at a state dog show, however not very many kids go to the state dog show so we try to move kids up to give them something to work toward.)
Showmanship is where the judge will actually judge your dog. In this class it is not required to have a purebred dog however it is good to have an idea as to how to best pose your dog which is defined by breed.
Obedience is just how it sounds! You will train your dog to obey the commands that are in each level of the dog program you are enrolled or signed up to enter at fair.
Agility is an obstacle course that you dog will go through and is a timed event. Your course will get more difficult as your dog masters different skills and progresses through the program.
Rally is like obedience however there are no verbal cues from the judge, instead there are signs that the handler must know and this is also a timed event. We have not participated in rally yet.
There are multiple dog shows throughout late summer and early fall that you can attend. You will need to make sure to decide which show you would like to use as your state score.
Check both the Dog Project guidebook and the 4-H South Dakota State Fair Handbook for deadlines and other information.
Dog Skill-a-thon
The members should know the dog breeds, items your would use to care for your dog, dog behavior and much more. The link is below of what is available to study for the contest. It is available at all the regional dog shows.
Other Ideas
Remember you can always complete and educational poster or tri-fold to enter at the fair. Or you could build a piece of agility equipment that your county is in need of.
